The incident was the result of what is known as a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) route leak, which is used to redirect traffic between internet providers. The Safe Host datacenter in Switzerland was responsible for accidentally releasing over 70,000 routes into the network for the Chinese operator. Users would have experienced significant drops in data speeds.
